Hurlburt Field began as a training field for the nearby Eglin Field. Atomic bomb training missions took place at Hurlburt, and the Gulf area climate made an excellent stand-in site for the Pacific island bases for the Pacific theater. Units assigned to Hurlburt Field today include the Air Force Special Operations Command, the 1st Special Operations Wing, and the USAF Special Operations School. Hurlburt Field is part of the greater Eglin Air Force Base.
