Basic Allowance For Housing (BAH)

Hurlburt Field Air Force Base began as a training field for the nearby Elgin Field. Atomic missions took place at Hurlburt, and the gulf launch sites came in handy when defending the Pacific island bases from the Japanese in 1944. Units assigned to Hurlburt Field Air Force Base include the Air Force Special Operations Command, the 1st Special Operations Wing, and the USAF Special Operations School. Located on base, Hurlburt Field has over 600 housing units available to eligible military personnel and their families. The Eglin Military Housing Office maintains a waiting list for available properties which could average between a year and a half and up to as much as three years. Personnel may apply for housing at Hurlburt or Elgin, but upon arrival, it is advisable to attend the housing briefing before committing to any accommodations. Off-post housing is available in the surrounding communities of Fort Walton Beach, Panama City, and Pensacola. Depending on rank, the housing office can advise those seeking homes for sale or rent if they are eligible for a basic housing allowance.
Currently, there are no schools on base. Hurlburt Field is located in Okaloosa County, and on-post residents attend Mary Esther or Florosa Elementary, Max Bruner Middle School or Fort Walton Beach High School. School attendance is required between the ages of six and sixteen. If housing is found off-post in Santa Rosa County, schools in the community of Navarre are the closest option. Home schooling and private schooling are both alternative options. If home schooling is desired, contact the School Board for more information. Hurlburt Field is located in southern Florida, so weather is humid in the summer and temperate in the winter. Hurlburt Field Air Force Base is part of the greater Elgin Air Force Base.
